Up the Grain Game

So I just placed my first “real” order of cover crop and grains. I had previously ordered some cover crops through Johnnys.

  • Fall Green Manure Mix Cover Crop Seed,

  • Medium Red Clover Organic Cover Crop Seed

  • Buckwheat (Common) Organic Cover Crop Seed

But I decided to up my grain game and take the cover cropping to the next level. I decided to order from Welter Seed and Honey:

  • Winter Wheat

  • Oats

  • Rye

  • Hairy Vetch

  • #9 Grazing Mix (they were out of the organic certified pasture mix)- but this is still non-GMO and treated with a OMRI listed inoculant

I currently have a couple of ideas for converting and supporting my perennial pasture

  1. 50’ x 150’ Silage tarp- I have 1 of these out in the field right now and it will have been on the plot for 8 weeks by the time I plant Sept 1. This will give me 8- 6’ passes of the seed drill and is where I am going to do the wheat and oats as this is the cleanest seed bed

  2. Overgrazed East pasture. I have pretty aggressively grazed my East pasture in preparation for amending and seeding a fall cover crop of Rye/Hairy Vetch on 1/2 and then the Grazing mix on the other half.

  3. Garden- I’m going to hand seed the empty garden beds that will be out of production for the winter.
