Where to Start?
“God. Are you there? I have doubts and I want to believe but don’t know how. Come Holy Spirit I am here. Teach me about you.”
Where do you even start with God? I mean he is God! He is the beginning and the end. The alpha and the omega!
Just like all journeys, the narrow path to find God starts right where you are. That would be right now! God will find you where you are but you have to seek him. If you are reading this right now then I’m guessing you are seeking more. That more you and I have been missing our whole lives is God.
So where to start:
Prayer- Yes Prayer. Prayer is a conversation between you and God. Pray your doubts, fears, longings. Ask God to help you find him. Start your prayer to God in the morning and don’t say Amen until before you go to sleep at night. Let your thoughts all be prayer to God. It’s not dumb and it will help you find Him.
The Holy Bible- Read the Bible- more on this in a second. Think of the Bible as God’s wikipedia page/YouTube Channel/X thread. Everything he wants you to know is in there.
Community- The Church and fellowship with other believers is powerful. Unfortunately, navigating the Church can be hard and can often turn people away from God. I’ll write more on my thoughts about finding the right church for you.
The Bible- there are a ton of different translations from the Old Testament Hebrew and New Testament Greek. There are even additional books of the Bible that are included in certain Bibles but are excluded in others.
Here is the Basic Layout:
Old Testament. New Testament.
My Favorite Bibles:
The Action Bible- I loved reading this to my Children and the Illustrations are awesome
CSB Notetaking Bible- great Bible to take notes during the sermon and in your study
Life Application Study Bible- New Living Translation- My Kids have the Boys/Girls version and love it.
The Message Bible- Great Bible written in contemporary language
Grab a Bible and let’s get started!
Where to Start?
Here is how I would read the Bible “cover to cover”
Genesis and Exodus.
Add some Psalms and a Proverb everyday.
Read the New Testament
Now go back and finish the New Testament Books you skipped (I know you skipped some of those short books :-). Don’t worry we all do!
Lastly, I’d finish the Old Testament. Finishing the Old Testament is a little bit like pulling teeth. The Jews are essentially meth heads and God is the dentist. They know what the problem is! They keep making the same mistake over and over and over. Thank God for Jesus!
What about the Apocrypha and the Book of Enoch? Fun to read but I’d try to read the 66 “main” books of the Bible first.
