SurgEnduro College
Welcome to SurgEnduro College !!
The concept of college is an interesting one. My educational path involved elementary school, middle school, high school, college, medical school, internship, residency, and fellowship. After finishing a Chief Year and Fellowship in Neurological Surgery you would think I was done. Every year there are Continue Medical Education Requirements requiring fees, travel, meetings, reading, etc. This is analogous to a good friend of mine that obtained an MBA from a top ranked business school. He is an executive at a large corporation and we both share podcast, articles, literature, books, thoughts, and ideas. In our most recent conversation he made an interesting comment, “I learn more from podcast than I did at Fuqua!” This was partly said in jest but it made me think.
Can you create an online, open source, rigorous educational paradigm that rivals/surpasses a traditional degree?
Absolutely! With one important caveat: Apprenticeship. Surgery is a great example of the importance of an apprenticeship. The same is true for sports like rock climbing, scuba diving, military training, food safety, farming, etc. Anytime the stakes are high it’s important to have some type of mentor to help you avoid the painful learning curve that humanity has already traversed.
Below is a stream of consciousness curriculum that I look to refine over the coming months. There is only one Major, One Course, One direction. Think of it as the course you would take if you want to drop an MBA/MD/BS/DO/JD/PhD/CPA/CFA (i’m sure i forgot some letters) in a blender.
