Inspiration

I was reading back through my notes at the end of residency when my wife and I were plotting our trajectory for the future. The future after residency. We had a legal pad, divided each page into a pro/con section for every job opportunity, and then finally narrowed our decision down to the place where we wanted to work, live, and raise our family. The decision was difficult but ultimately with every decision you have to make the decision! Not long after we decided where we were going to live I was listening to the late Chris Blanchard’s Farmer to Farmer Podcast and his interview with Eliot Coleman. For me that is the most inspiring farming podcast episode and after finding my notes on from 2016 I re-listened to it today.

Coleman Inspiration

  • I identified with his early life experience of being a climber. I’ve climbed all over the world and the lessons learning in the mountains have been priceless in my life. The lesson of attention to detail is lifesaving in rock climbing, neurosurgery, and really every facet of life.

  • Both our farms are 60 acres

  • He has 1.5 acres under cultivation

  • The concept of a self fed farm is fascinating to me

  • The integration of rotational grazing program with an organic market garden

  • The utilization of hand tools and a BCS tractor
