Harvest struggles

Yesterday was an interesting harvest. I went out into the garden to harvest carrots and was surprised at the inconsistencies. Very few straight carrots, a lot of forking, small, and incredibly difficult to harvest because of soil compaction. The heavy clay soil and 2.3% organic matter of that bed need a lot of work. I was a little disappointed because that bed was broadforked, had a cover crop, and 4” of compost applied.

Cover crop strategy to help this bed:

  1. Rye

  2. Hairy Vetch

  3. Daikon radish

  4. Winter triticale

I was able to harvest plenty of okra, carrots, cucumbers, and tomatoes for dinner though. So overall the day was a win. The red okra does have the highest Japanese beetle pressure of anything in my garden.
