Training Research Tetany
Definition of tetany: severe, intermittent muscle contractions
Training Research Tetany definition- a whole body muscle spasm when you can’t get up from you computer to actually workout because you are too busy researching which workout to do! Synonym = Analysis Paralysis
Don’t get me wrong sometimes I like thinking about exercising more than I actually like exercising. Right now is an excellent example. I would rather type this out than go workout again today (granted I did get my 0530 workout in.
So what’s the point of this post?
To provide you with my thoughts and reviews of several training books and programs available online. Several of which have no reviews that I could easily find. Note: I do not believe there is any perfect workout plan. The only workout plan that is perfect is the one you are doing right now.
Training Programs Reviews
Jacked Street on Train Heroics- Full disclosure- I’m only 2 weeks in and I really like this program. The Train Heroics platform is very nice (not perfect- IE I wish it would export workouts to Training Peaks and allow HR/intensity tracking). Both are Peaksware companies so this type of integration would be nice.
Purple Patch Squad- Great for cardio and endurance training IF you have access to a bike and pool. Love the workouts but don’t like Today’s Plan- probably because I have used training peaks for so long.
Nonprophet- I’ve been a follower of Mark Twight for a long time (ie I read Twitching with Twight every year on Jan 1 and have done so for the better part of 2 decades). My first mountaineering book was Extreme Alpinism. His training program is excellent if you like the crossfit style workouts. He started Gym Jones, left, and creating great content at Nonprophet. I don’t love the organization of the website and wish they would consider using something like Train Heroic. His books Strength and Endurance are very good. They are pretty expensive mindset pamphlets that can be read in a quick sitting. Not much data but great for mindset and direction.
Overtime Athlete- I have 4 kids that are just now getting in to sports and I agree with Chris’ comments on not training kids for the lifts but building athleticism. I’m just starting to explore his modules and the purchasing system for each module is a little confusing. There is some very good content here.
Short Cut to Size by Jim Stoppani- this was originally free on bodybuilding.com but now it appears they charge for it and the app. It’s a great program, I’ve done it probably 4 times over the last 8 years and like Stoppani’s approach.
Buff Dudes- this is another workout plan from the archives that we did last year. It was great, entertaining, and introduced some different lifts
Baywatch Body Workout- I know. I’m not proud of purchasing this one either. It is also an expensive pamphlet. Phase 1 and 2 both have surprisingly few workouts. You don’t need much equipment for any of these workouts and the nutritional advice is reasonable. I personally don’t believe the value is here.
